There are two situations that attribute to Piriformis which are exercise overload i.e. sports and the other is biomechanical which has to do with your gait and/or posture. Treatment for this issue is the same as most other muscular conditions; Rest, ice, compression, elevation and referral. One can also use what is called a tens unit which helps with electrically loosening the muscle which brings tremendous relief. Finally, prevention is as simple as stretching before any activity.

Key Takeaways:

  • The piriformis muscle links the bottom segment of the spine to the femur.
  • Exercising too much, running on hard surfaces, and other training errors can cause piriformis syndrome.
  • Problems with posture or the biomechanics of sitting or running can also cause or aggravate piriformis problems.

"Piriformis syndrome is a condition in which the piriformis muscle becomes tight or spasms, and irritates the sciatic nerve."
