Piriformis Syndrome and Piriformis Muscle Stretches
If you have muscle pain then it may just be a condition called Piriformis Syndrome. This condition affects the sciatic nerve which causes pain in the lower back and thigh.

There are two situations that attribute to Piriformis which are exercise overload i.e. sports and the other is biomechanical which has to do with your gait and/or posture. Treatment for this issue is the same as most other muscular conditions; Rest, ice, compression, elevation and referral. One can also use what is called a tens unit which helps with electrically loosening the muscle which brings tremendous relief. Finally, prevention is as simple as stretching before any activity.
Key Takeaways:
- The piriformis muscle links the bottom segment of the spine to the femur.
- Exercising too much, running on hard surfaces, and other training errors can cause piriformis syndrome.
- Problems with posture or the biomechanics of sitting or running can also cause or aggravate piriformis problems.
"Piriformis syndrome is a condition in which the piriformis muscle becomes tight or spasms, and irritates the sciatic nerve."
